MetaTrader 5 (MT5) · South Africa

Moving from MT4 to MT5 is a period rather than a decision: a separate account has to exist for the newer platform, both run side by side for a while, and some things do not travel across at all.

Moving from one platform to the newer one is usually described as a choice and is experienced as a stretch of time. A separate account has to exist before anything can happen there; both platforms then run side by side while whatever is already open finishes where it started; and a set of things — history, layouts, habits — do not travel and have to be rebuilt or waited out. Nothing in the sequence is long on its own, and the whole of it is longer than anybody expects.

The move starts with something being created, not converted

The first thing to know about the switch is that nothing is converted. The newer platform works with a record of its own, so the first act is creating one, and that act takes about as long as any other record creation — which is to say almost no time at all.

This surprises people who expect a migration in the usual sense, with data being carried from one side to the other. There is no carrying: there is an old thing that continues to exist and a new thing that starts empty, and the period between them is the entire subject of this page.

Because nothing is converted, nothing can be lost by starting. The old account is untouched by the existence of a new one, which makes the beginning of the move the least costly and most reversible part of it.

The overlap, and what sets its length

Both platforms can be installed, connected and used at the same time. There is no moment at which one is switched off, and no requirement to choose a day. In practice the overlap lasts as long as the slowest thing that has to end naturally.

What ends naturally is whatever was already running when the move began. It stays on the platform where it started, follows its own schedule and finishes there, which means the last of those items sets the earliest date the old platform can be closed for good.

This is why the honest unit for the whole move is not hours but however long is left on the oldest open thing. Everything else about the switch can be finished in an afternoon; that one component cannot be hurried and does not care that a decision has been made.

What does not travel

A new account begins with an empty past. The record of what happened stays with the account that produced it, which is not a loss — the old account remains readable — but it does mean that anything computed from a continuous record has a gap in the middle of it from that day forward.

Saved arrangements belong to an installation rather than to an account: chart layouts, templates, the set of instruments in a watch list, and every small adjustment accumulated over time. Rebuilding them is not difficult and is almost always the longest deliberate task in the move, because it is many small tasks rather than one big one.

The practical approach is to rebuild only what is actually used. Most accumulated arrangements were made once and never touched again, and the move is the one moment when carrying them across can be declined at no cost.

The part that outlasts everything technical

The last component of the move is not on any machine. Reaching for the familiar platform out of habit continues long after everything has been set up on the newer one, and it is the reason the overlap tends to be described as longer than it needed to be.

It is also the one part that can be shortened deliberately. Removing the old shortcut from wherever it is normally clicked does more to end an overlap than any amount of setup, because the habit is triggered by the shortcut rather than by a preference.

Until the old platform is genuinely closed, both are live and both can be acted on, which is the one real risk in a long overlap: not that something breaks, but that an instruction goes to the platform that was not intended.

Working through the switch without a false start

  1. Create the record for the newer platform first. It is instant, it is reversible, and nothing about the existing one is affected by it.
  2. Leave anything already open where it is. It will finish on the platform where it started, and that is what sets the earliest sensible end of the overlap.
  3. Run both for a while on purpose rather than by accident, and note which one each instruction is meant for while both are live.
  4. Rebuild only the arrangements actually in use. Most saved layouts were made once and never revisited, and this is the moment to leave them behind.
  5. Expect the past to stay where it was made; keep the older account readable rather than trying to move what it holds.
  6. End the overlap by removing the old shortcut, not by deciding to stop using it — habit follows the shortcut.

This page describes the shape and length of the move. What each platform does is described on its own page.

Frequently asked questions

How long does moving from one platform to the newer one take?
The technical part takes an afternoon. The whole move lasts as long as the oldest thing that was already open when it started, because that item finishes where it began.
Is the existing account converted?
No. The newer platform works with a record of its own, so the move begins by creating one. The existing account is untouched and stays usable throughout.
Can both platforms be used at the same time?
Yes, and for most people that is what actually happens. There is no cut-over moment and no requirement to choose a day; the overlap simply lasts until nothing is left running on the old side.
Does anything already open move across?
No. It stays on the platform where it was opened and finishes there. That is normally what determines the earliest point at which the old platform can be closed for good.
What has to be rebuilt rather than carried over?
Saved chart arrangements, templates and watch lists, because they belong to an installation rather than to an account. Rebuilding them is the longest deliberate task in the move.
What is the slowest part of the whole switch?
Habit. Everything technical finishes quickly; reaching for the familiar platform continues afterwards, and the effective fix is removing the old shortcut rather than resolving to stop using it.
